A 40-year-old security guard working at a Navi Mumbai housing complex was arrested for the murder of a married woman, police said on Thursday. The body of the deceased was recovered from bushes.

The accused, identified as Rajkumar Baburam Pal, is said to have been dating with the deceased. According to the police, he wanted to get rid of the woman following her constant demand for marriage.

The body of an unidentified woman, in the age group of 35 to 40 years, was found in bushes near a housing society in Koparkhairne area of Navi Mumbai town in Thane district on February 12, senior police inspector Vishwanath Kolekar said while talking to news agency PTI.

The dead body was sent for post-mortem by the Koparkhairne Police and a case under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of an offence) against an unidentified person was arrested.

Kolekar further said that the woman had been strangled to death with a ‘odhni’ (a long piece of cloth worn around the neck) and the body dumped in bushes to destroy evidence.

Later, the police sent a message to all police stations in Maharashtra about finding the body and seeking any complaints about the missing woman. Trombay police station responded to the message, informing the case in neighbouring Mumbai. The description of the body and the missing woman matched which gave police a lead in the probe.

The police approached the husband of the missing woman, who said she worked as a cleaner in the Mankhurd area of Mumbai and had been missing. The victim’s mobile phone was also recovered by the cops, through which they came to know that security guard Pal was in love with her.

After being arrested, Pal told the police that the woman had been repeatedly asking him to marry her.  Fed up of her constant demand, he called her to a spot near the housing complex where he worked and strangled her, the police said.

The accused then dumped the body in bushes near the housing society. Further probe is on in the case.
